Brief History of the Department

Department of Urdu is one of the youngest Departments of kazi Nazrul University. It was started in the year 9th November 2019 under the coordinator ship (Ext) Dr Md Farooque Azam with few guest lecturers. In the month of October 2023, one contractual teacher and six guest faculty recruited in the department. During these years all faculties has given the Department a complete shape by their academic and administrative capabilities in terms of developing infrastructures and academic resources. The department is one of the vibrant departments in the University. The Department offers Postgraduate and Doctoral Programmes. Apart from teaching, the department has organized numerous memorable and glorious programmes in past years that includes Students Seminar, National Seminars, Special Lectures and Celerabation of birth anniversary of renowned Urdu fiction writers and organize a different Social and Cultural Program. While the Department provides a hospitable environment for every kind of research, some new academic fields created by it have had a significant impact on arts and humanities research in India.


Vision and Mission of the Department

The Department currently functions with a dedicated and diverse teaching faculty comprising one contractual teacher and six reputed guest lecturers, with academic and administrative coordination overseen by Dr. Md. Farooque Azam. Together, the faculty brings expertise across major domains of Urdu studies.

The curriculum is designed to meet national academic standards and aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP), ensuring that Urdu studies remain relevant within contemporary global and interdisciplinary frameworks.

  • To provide basic knowledge regarding concepts, theories, issues, and debates that characterize the study of contemporary Urdu, enabling students to confidently appear in NET, SET, and RET (Ph.D.) examinations.
  • To initiate intellectual curiosity among students for understanding pressing social issues through literature.
  • To emphasize high-quality and innovative teaching, ensuring outstanding student experiences, academic excellence, and responsiveness to the social, cultural, and economic needs of the community and society.
  • To provide access to new technologies for teaching-learning and research.
  • To create a vibrant academic environment that supports enhanced student experiences, effective teaching, and quality research.

Future Plans

  • To introduce Mass Communication in Urdu.
  • To introduce Certificate and Diploma Course in Urdu Language.
  • To motivate the students for preparing departmental magazines, group discussions, educational tours, UGC NTA NET & SET preparation, B.Ed. admission tests, RET for Ph.D. enrolment, and other competitive examinations.
  • To inculcate human values and constitutional values among the students through different curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • To orient the curriculum, teaching-learning, and research so that the extent of academics can be broadened and a global identity can be established.
  • To fulfil the responsibilities as a public institute in:
    1. Providing intellectual support for the study and practice of Urdu culture.
    2. Facilitating higher education through the Urdu language.
  • To develop sustainable work practices among the students to achieve sustainable development in society.
  • To produce a community that will be actively involved in the process of national development.
  • To maintain the consistency of higher education and research and thereby increase the opportunities for the students and researchers to establish themselves in future.
  • To promote the study of Urdu language and literature and create fruitful outcomes that would secure the future of the students.
