Commencing its journey in the academic session 2023–2024, the Department of Sanskrit is a significant recent addition to the academic landscape of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol. Established under the leadership of the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Professor Debashish Bandyopadhyay along with the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professor (Dr) Sajalkumar Bhattacharya, the department was envisioned to fulfill the growing demand for classical linguistic and philosophical studies in the region.
In its inaugural year, the department opened its doors to a foundational cohort with an intake capacity of 60 students. Since then, it has remained committed to creating a rigorous academic environment that bridges the gap between ancient Indian heritage and modern critical scholarship, catering to the postgraduate aspirations of students from across the state.
The Department currently functions with a dedicated and diverse teaching faculty comprising one contractual teacher and five reputed guest lecturers, with academic and administrative coordination overseen by Dr. Asish Khan. Together, the faculty brings expertise across major domains of Sanskrit studies, including Veda, Kavya, Vyakarana, and Darshana.
The curriculum is designed to meet national academic standards and aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy, ensuring that Sanskrit studies remain relevant within contemporary global and interdisciplinary frameworks.
The vision of the Department extends beyond classroom instruction to fostering a holistic and inclusive academic environment. It regularly organizes Sanskrit Divas (World Sanskrit Day) celebrations, departmental seminars, and invited lectures. Students are encouraged to participate in Sanskrit recitation, debate, and essay-writing competitions, and interdisciplinary collaboration is promoted with allied disciplines such as History and Bengali.
The introduction of a postgraduate programme in Sanskrit at the University is envisioned as a crucial step towards academic continuity, equity, and access, significantly expanding opportunities for aspiring scholars within the region.
Looking ahead, the Department aims to introduce specialized workshops in Manuscriptology and Paleography, along with outreach initiatives to promote spoken Sanskrit and wider public engagement with the language.
